Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML) is a language used to describe 3D virtual worlds, defined by the ISO and IEC international standard (ISO/IEC 14772-2) since 1995. VRML files typically have extensions .wrl, .wrz, or .vrml. The main purpose of this language is to allow the representation of interactive 3D virtual environments. The .wrl files are text files that describe virtual scenes using the VRML language. The .wrl files can be stored locally on a computer or downloaded from a web server and viewed using a viewer.

Description of VRML files and their extensions

VRML programs can describe simple shapes (points, lines, polygons) or complex shapes (spheres, cubes, cones, cylinders), text, images, animations, lighting, sounds, hyperlinks, as well as their arrangement in space, texture, color, and material. VRML files can be created using various 3D modeling software such as 3ds Max, Abaqus, ArcGis (ArcScene), Archicad, Blender, CATIA V5, Cinema 4D, Rhinoceros, SketchUp, Solid Edge, among others.

Main purpose of VRML language and how .wrl files are used

VRML is strictly a presentation language and not a programming language. Like HTML, a VRML file generally does not contain a sequence of instructions, but rather information that allows the viewer to display the elements (shapes, sensors, lights, etc.) later.

VRML: A Presentation Language for Immersive Experiences

Interoperable compatibility is essential for virtual reality and augmented reality applications, and VRML allows such compatibility due to its international standard. VRML files can be integrated into websites or other software applications, allowing for immersive 3D interaction with users.

Interoperable Compatibility: Why VRML is Ideal for VR and AR Applications

In summary, VRML is a language used to describe 3D virtual worlds, defined by the ISO/IEC 14772-2 standard. VRML files allow the representation of interactive 3D virtual environments with simple or complex shapes, text, images, animations, lighting, sounds, hyperlinks, as well as their arrangement in space, texture, color, and material. VRML files typically have extensions .wrl, .wrz, or .vrml. The interoperable compatibility of this language makes it an ideal choice for virtual reality and augmented reality applications.
